Employers..."

“Students learn that private companies destroy jobs while government policy creates them. Employers exploit while the state protects. Free markets offer chaos while government regulation brings order. Globalization is destructive, if not catastrophic. Business is a zero-sum game, the source of a litany of modern social problems.”

-
- Europe’s Philosophy of Failure by Stephen Theil

Stephen Theil, while in Europe on fellowship, details the startling anti-market and anti-globalization bias present in France and Germany which ensures that students are indoctrinated with the view that markets and capitalism are evil. As he writes, students are not so much taught economics as they are taught about economics. Compare this to the prevailing trend of teaching classical economics in the United States without much bias one way or the other.

The effects on entrepreneurship is also telling. While France and Germany produce their share of startups and entrepreneurs (Loic Le Meur and Tariq Krim) they still lag behind the activity present in the UK and especially the US. Can an economy grow and compete all while reviling creative destruction (and construction), vilifying risks, rejecting technology and promoting government?

Lastly, how can they get away with the blatant misinformation being dispensed (especially in the French example provided)? India was stagnant at best until the liberalization in the 1990s. China became a behemoth when the communist party finally loosened its grip over the economy. Surely these facts are bound to break through at some point in the student’s education?

I wonder if the higher-ups in France and Germany truly believe the principles they teach or whether they promote them to create a population reliant on the government and consequently on the elite who run it.

One of my favorite songs by Arcade Fire: Neighborhood #3 (Power...

One of my favorite songs by Arcade Fire: Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) from their album Funeral

How we spend.

How we spend.

dailymeh:
